Choose the Name Over the Check (Proverbs 22:1)
Exhibit AKey Evidence
- The scene: Brink! (1998). āI was on Team X-Bladz once. It wasnāt any fun.ā
- Team Pup āNā Suds has just won the Aggressive Inline Skating Championship, and the crowd is calling Val Horrigan a cheater.
- Jimmy, who runs the X-Bladz sponsorship, comes straight to Brink: āVal, heās out. The cheatingās a bad thing, man. You, youāre in.ā He offers Brink the captainās spot, plus money and sponsorships.
- Brink knows what that deal costs. Earlier in the film he joined X-Bladz in secret for $200 a week to help his family while his dad was out of work. He hid it from his friends, broke trust with them and his parents, and blamed himself when Gabriella was hurt in a race Val set up.
- This time Brink answers, āI was on Team X-Bladz once. It wasnāt any fun,ā and goes back to his friends.
- Scripture: āA good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and goldā (Proverbs 22:1). The money was real, and so was his familyās need, but a reputation for being trustworthy is worth more than a paycheck. Once a good name is spent, it is hard to buy back.
- When the offer comes back around, remember what it cost the first time.

Brink! (1998) ends with a test. Brink just won the championship clean, and Val just got exposed for cheating. The X-Bladz sponsor drops Val on the spot and offers Brink the captain's spot with money and sponsorships. Brink already knows that deal. He took it once in secret to help his struggling family, lied to his best friends, and watched one of them get hurt. This time he walks away, back to his friends.
Scripture puts it this way: "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold" (Proverbs 22:1, NKJV). Money comes and goes. Trust, once spent, is expensive to buy back.
