Which Jesus Said It?

Theme: A retro game show that checks lines from Mrs. Betty Bowers' satire "The Gospel of GOP Jesus" against the Bible. Bible Jesus wins every round. The bonus round turns the question back on everyone: a Jesus remade for either party is one of the many "christs" He warned about, and the only way to know the real one is from His Word (Matthew 24:4-5, NKJV).

Summary

Mrs. Betty Bowers is a satire character. In "The Gospel of GOP Jesus" she plays a church lady who has remade Jesus into a partisan who agrees with her on everything. We turned four of her lines into game-show rounds and let Scripture answer. Round 1: Jesus "was being sarcastic" about selling your possessions and giving to the poor. He wasn't, and her own satire says so. Round 2: "Bible Jesus was strangely silent" on abortion and homosexuality. When asked about marriage, Jesus went back to the beginning: God "made them male and female," and the two become one flesh. Round 3: "I knew you in the womb" is a vague verse. It isn't. Round 4: Numbers 5:11-31 is a "magic potion to perform abortions." The passage is the law of jealousy, a test for a wife suspected of adultery, and it mentions no abortion. The bonus round asks: GOP Jesus or progressive Jesus? Wrong answer. Jesus Himself warned, "Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many."

Key lines (Mrs. Betty Bowers, satire)

  • "You see, Jesus didn't say, 'Go and sell your possessions and give to the poor.' He said, 'Go and sell your possessions and give to the poor.'" (1:20)
  • "Whereas Bible Jesus was strangely silent on those two topics." (4:31)
  • "Like, for example, 'I knew you in the womb.' I never really understood that one…" (5:20)
  • "Numbers 5:11 through 31 provides a handy magic potion to perform abortions." (6:03)

Scripture

  • Matthew 19:21 (NKJV): "Jesus said to him, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.'"
  • Matthew 19:4-6 (NKJV): "And He answered and said to them, 'Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning "made them male and female," and said, "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh"? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.'"
  • Jeremiah 1:5 (NKJV): "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations."
  • Psalm 139:13 (NKJV): "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb."
  • Numbers 5:29 (NKJV): "This is the law of jealousy, when a wife, while under her husband's authority, goes astray and defiles herself,"
  • Matthew 24:4-5 (NKJV): "And Jesus answered and said to them: 'Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, "I am the Christ," and will deceive many.'"

Takeaway

It's easy to laugh at a Jesus remade to fit one party, and just as easy to build one for the other side. Jesus warned that many would come in His name and deceive many. The real Jesus meant what He said about the poor, about marriage, and about the life He forms in the womb. There are many christs on offer, but only one is real, and we know Him from His Word, not from our politics.
