The Mitchell-Hedges “Skull of Doom” was copied from the British Museum crystal skull, acquired in 1898, right after modern tools made carving quartz skulls possible. Both were later shown to be fakes.
Sidney Burney tried to sell this one for ten years. In 1943 Frederick Mitchell-Hedges bought it at auction in London and wrote his brother, excited about the purchase.
Five years later he told a local paper he had found it himself on a daring expedition to Central America. He sold stories for a living. Sea monsters, man-eating sharks, undiscovered animals. The skull was one more.
