Who Can Impart the Spirit?

Clip credit: Jay Williams / Scripture Over Everything — "DAYSTAR Got Philip Anthony Mitchell In A CHOKEHOLD! Lord Have Mercy Philip! What Are You Doing?!" (YouTube, uploaded Oct 21, 2026)
Key texts: Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 3:2; Ephesians 5:11; 2 John 10–11 (NKJV)

Summary

On Daystar's *Ministry Now*, Philip Anthony Mitchell, promoting his book *Contend*, says "the greatest threat to the American church is the American pulpit." Later in the broadcast, the host tells viewers that at the end of the program "we're going to ask pastor to pray for that impartation of the Holy Spirit." Jay Williams answers from the text: Ephesians 1:13 and Galatians 3:2 (read in the KJV on screen).

The point

  • The Spirit is received by faith. Believers "were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise" after hearing "the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation" and believing (Eph 1:13). Paul asks the Galatians, "Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" (Gal 3:2). Scripture never makes a preacher, a program, or a prayer segment the channel through which the Spirit is given.
  • Platforms matter. "Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them" (Eph 5:11). "If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds" (2 John 10–11). A pastor who rightly warns about the pulpit still has to weigh which pulpits he lends his name to.

Fairness note

The impartation line was spoken by the host, not by Mitchell. The clip does not show what Mitchell prayed. The critique concerns the framing of the program and Mitchell's choice to appear on it.

Verses (NKJV)

  • Ephesians 1:13 — "In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,"
  • Galatians 3:2 — "This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?"
  • Ephesians 5:11 — "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them."
  • 2 John 10–11 — "If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds."

Who can impart the Holy Spirit?

On Daystar's Ministry Now, Philip Anthony Mitchell said the greatest threat to the American church is the American pulpit. Later the host announced they would ask him to pray for "that impartation of the Holy Spirit" over viewers.

Scripture answers. Believers were "sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise" after they heard the gospel and believed (Eph 1:13). The Spirit is received "by the hearing of faith," not by the works of the law (Gal 3:2).

Platforms matter. "Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them" (Eph 5:11). "He who greets him shares in his evil deeds" (2 John 11). If you warn about the pulpit, weigh which pulpits you lend your name to.
