What Is "Demon Face" Syndrome?

Shelf · Church Discernment & False Teachers 85 of 86

Exhibit AKey Evidence

  1. A four-year-old boy in Japan began seeing human faces, ears and hair as distorted a few days after he recovered from an upper respiratory infection.
  2. His eye exams were normal. Brain MRI, MR angiography and EEG showed no abnormalities, and his IQ was 123.
  3. The one abnormal result was an elevated Mycoplasma pneumoniae antibody titer (1:160).
  4. In his drawings, only the faces, ears and hair were stretched.
  5. Pediatricians and an ophthalmologist at Tokyo Medical University diagnosed prosopometamorphopsia (PMO), a rare disorder of face perception popularly called “demon face syndrome” (Cureus, Feb 2026).
  6. The authors call the infection link a hypothesis, not proof. The paper does not say he saw only “certain people” as distorted, and it does not describe the store and park incidents the narrator mentions.
  7. A frightening nickname is not a diagnosis. Test what you hear, and answer fear with facts and faith.

"Demon Face" Syndrome: What the Case Report Actually Says (2 Timothy 1:7)

Source clip: narration from the YouTube channel MinutesOfHorror, "They Were Not Meant To See This..." (2026), used for commentary. The narrator is not named. We use only the part about the Japanese boy's case. We left out the rest of the video, which speculates about plastic surgery, celebrities and other topics.

The case

A four-year-old Japanese boy began seeing human faces, ears and hair as distorted a few days after he recovered from an upper respiratory infection. Eye exams were normal (visual acuity 1.2 in both eyes, normal eye movements, pressures and light reflexes, no astigmatism). Brain MRI, MR angiography and EEG showed no abnormalities. His IQ was 123, and developmental screening was normal. The one abnormal result was an elevated *Mycoplasma pneumoniae* antibody titer (1:160). In his drawings, only the faces, ears and hair were stretched.

Pediatricians and an ophthalmologist at Tokyo Medical University diagnosed prosopometamorphopsia (PMO), a rare disorder of face perception that is popularly called "demon face syndrome." They describe it as, to their knowledge, the first reported case with early-childhood onset and a possible post-infectious trigger. When the report was written he was five, and the distortion was unchanged.

What the report does not claim

The authors call the infection link a hypothesis. A mildly raised antibody level does not prove that the infection caused the condition, and no spinal-fluid, PCR or functional imaging tests were done. The paper does not say that he saw only "certain people" as distorted. It also does not describe the store and park incidents the narrator mentions. The second drawing is a portrait of his brother that his mother drew from the boy's description. It is not a normal drawing for comparison.

Scripture

A frightening nickname is not a diagnosis. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV). Test what you hear (1 Thessalonians 5:21) and answer fear with facts and faith.

What is "demon face" syndrome? 👁️

After an ordinary respiratory infection, a 4-year-old in Japan began seeing faces stretched. His eyes, brain MRI and EEG were normal. His drawings showed it: only faces, ears and hair were distorted.

Tokyo Medical University doctors reported the case in Cureus (Feb 2026). The rare condition: prosopometamorphopsia (PMO). They suspect a post-infection reaction, but call that link a hypothesis, not proof.

A scary nickname isn't a diagnosis. Test what you hear and don't let fear do your thinking. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
