Theatrics or Revival?
Exhibit AKey Evidence
- Fox News: Atlanta’s 2819 Church “took over AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas” for a night of prayer, with an estimated 80,000 people.
- Philip Anthony Mitchell, on stage: “The pendulum could swing in either direction… but tonight we can start something that’ll make us swing in the opposite direction, towards revival and repentance and fire!”
- Mitchell, on Fox News: “I think there is a hunger for spirituality… what we’re seeing right now is God stirring up faith in this generation… a move of God.”
- Mitchell’s own post, Oct 11: “Just learned that a teenage girl was HEALED of deafness and removed her hearing aids last night at ACCESS in TX.”
- The host calls the stadium moment “completely theatrical… a display.” “He didn’t say there’s a hunger for truth, a hunger for Christ, a hunger for the Word.”
- He argues Mitchell preaches a works-based gospel and does not preach the free gift or eternal security.
- On the healing claim: no public word from the girl or her family, and no doctor’s report. He puts it next to Todd White’s “leg extension parlor tricks.”
- “Massive conferences” that are “all emotion-driven” are “not a revival.” “No testing, no asking for some type of proof or verification.”
- The healing is claimed and unverified. No name, family statement, or medical confirmation has been made public. Scripture doesn’t ask us to cheer every report. It tells us to test it.
Exhibit BFrom the Word
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.”
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
“Test all things; hold fast what is good.”
