Exhibit AKey Evidence

  1. Mark Passio, who says he was once a Church of Satan priest, defines the word: “occult” comes from the Latin occultus, “hidden from sight.”
  2. That is accurate as etymology: occultus comes from occulere, “to cover over.”
  3. Unverified: Passio’s claim to have been a Church of Satan priest. The Church of Satan disputes it.
  4. A harmless-sounding word doesn’t make the practices harmless. The meaning of a word does not settle the morality of the practice.
  5. God forbids the practices themselves: divination, witchcraft, charming, consulting familiar spirits, wizardry and necromancy, “for all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
  6. What is hidden won’t stay hidden (Luke 8:17).
  7. We share his words only to test them by Scripture.

Exhibit BFrom the Word

“For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.”
Luke 8:17 KJV
“There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 KJV

Short clips from a 2016 Mark Passio lecture on Satanism and the occult (Philadelphia, PA, February 26, 2016, as shown on his slides). Passio says he was once a priest in the Church of Satan; the Church of Satan disputes this. He is not a Christian teacher. We use his words only to test them against Scripture, and we do not recommend his material.

Part 1 of 2: Occult Means Hidden (Luke 8:17)

Passio gives the word's origin: "occult" comes from the Latin *occultus*, "hidden from sight." That is accurate as etymology (*occultus* comes from *occulere*, "to cover over").
The meaning of a word does not settle the morality of the practice, though. God forbids the practices themselves: "There shall not be found among you any one that… useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD" (Deuteronomy 18:10-12, KJV).
Nothing hidden stays hidden: "For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad" (Luke 8:17, KJV).

OCCULT MEANS HIDDEN · Part 1 of 2

Mark Passio, who says he was once a Church of Satan priest, defines the word: "occult" comes from the Latin occultus, "hidden from sight."

A harmless-sounding word doesn't make the practices harmless. God plainly forbids divination, witchcraft, charming, consulting familiar spirits, wizardry and necromancy: "for all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD" (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

And what is hidden won't stay hidden:
"For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad." Luke 8:17 (KJV)

We share his words only to test them by Scripture.
